Connecting Children to their Dreams.....

The Margaretta Local School District received the Ohio Department of Education’s academic rating, EXCELLENT, on their District Report Card for the 2010-2011 school year. In addition, Margaretta Elementary School received EXCELLENT WITH DISTINCTION, the highest academic rating! We are all very proud of this enormous achievement. Many thanks & much credit goes to the entire Margaretta community. Specifically, this academic accomplishment could not have occurred with out the hard work & dedication of the students, teachers, parents & staff at Margaretta!

There are four components on the District Report Card that measure achievement and progress of students within a school building or school district. These standards are: 1) State Indicators (test scores and graduation/attendance rates), 2) Performance Index, 3) Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and 4) Value-Added data. The combination of these measures is the basis for assigning state designations to each building and district: Excellent with Distinction, Excellent, Effective, Continuous Improvement, Academic Watch and Academic Emergency.

There are 24 “test score indicators” for each school district. The grade levels tested range from third grade through eleventh grade. The areas tested are reading, math, writing, science and social studies. The specific test areas vary from grade to grade. The district’s attendance and graduation rates are also counted as two of the 26 “Report Card Indicators”. Margaretta achieved 21 out of 26 of these indicators. The benchmark to consider having reached the standard is 75% of all students tested having to have passed each test. Out of the 5 indicators missed, 4 were between 71.4% - 74.8%.

The second area measured is called the “Performance Index”. This measure rewards the achievement of every student, not just those who score proficient or higher. Performance levels include advanced, accelerated, proficient, basic and limited. Margaretta achieved a performance index of 99.0. A performance index of 100.0 would have increased the designation by one rating.

The federally mandated “No Child Left Behind Act” dictates the third area where a school district must achieve. “Adequate Yearly Progress” specifically measures how much a school’s “subgroups” are achieving. Each school district must have its subgroups increase achievement by 10% per year. Examples of students in subgroups are students who are socio-economically disadvantaged, students who have special education needs, or students who are in minority groups. Margaretta met AYP this school year.

The final component to make up a rating is called “Value Added”. This was new to the report cards for 2007-08 school year and recognizes that districts and schools may be making significant improvement in the academic performances of their students even though they have not met the standard for student achievement. The Margaretta Local School District has exceeded growth indicating that we have achieved more than one year of expected growth for our students over the past year. Above Expected Growth increased our rating by one designation.
