
MUSIC BENEFIT This Saturday, February 11th, from 7:00-10:00 a.m., the McDonald's on SR 101 will be hosting an All-You-Can-Eat Hotcakes event, with all proceeds to benefit Margaretta Music. Thank you McDonald's for supporting the music program at Margaretta! 2012-2013 KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION Kindergarten registration is scheduled for April 18-20 at the Margaretta Board of Education. The times will be 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day with extended hours on April 18 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. No appointment is necessary. Children must be 5 years old by September 30, 2012. More information and registration packets will be available soon. SUMMER FOOTBALL CALENDAR The 2012 preseason football calendar for students in grades 9-12 is now available. This has been updated 2/2/12 to reflect a scheduling change in August (Willard). GRACE STUDY CLUB Margaretta students in grades 3-6 are invited to join "Grace Study Club", sponsorered by Grace Lutheran Church and community volunteers. CHILDREN'S BEREAVEMENT CAMP Hospice of Memorial Hospital has scheduled their annual Camp Fearless Children's Bereavement Camp for this summer. The dates are June 25-June 29. The camp will be held every day from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The camp is a week of therapeutic activities, arts and crafts, team building, and fun! The children will explore issues related to the impact of losses on our lives, in a safe and supportive atmosphere. This camp is free of charge. TOY DRIVES AT MARGARETTA Thank you to everyone who participated in toy drives. Because of your generosity, the National Honor Society was able to donate $1,113 and many new toys to Margaretta Project Share. Mr. Weyer's 2nd period class brought in the most donations totaling $162. The elementary toy drive sponsored by the Leadership class brought in 200 toys. Mrs. Burkett's class was our winner with over 70 toys. COMMUNITY SERVICE On Wednesday, November 16th, members of the Margaretta baseball program completed a community service opportunity. Twelve participates that represented the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes helped rake leaves and clean out the gutters for Mr. and Mrs. Meyer of Bay View. Mr. Cliff Meyers is 89 years old and is a veteran of World War II.
NESBITT TO CLEVELAND STATE Kaitlin Nesbitt signed her letter of intent on Thursday to attend Division I Cleveland State University next year on a scholarship for volleyball. Congratulations!
ERIE COUNTY NEEDS OUR HELP Care and Share of Erie County is in need of blankets, new or gently used. They are unable to meet the demands of those in need of blankets. If you can donate, please drop them off at the Margaretta Board of Education. Thank you! The Erie County Dog Pound is in need of unused dog houses. BANNER PRESENTATION The Margaretta Local School District received an EXCELLENT rating on the Local Report Card from the Ohio Department of Education! In addition, Margaretta Elementary received EXCELLENT WITH DISTINCTION (the highest academic rating)! We are all very proud of this enormous achievement. FOOD SERVICES UPDATE 2011-2012 Free and Reduced Lunch Applications are now located on the Food Services webpage. Applications can also be filled out any time throughout the school year if your income or family size changes. Breakfast is offered to ALL students in Margaretta Local Schools and also North Point ESC, Townsend. The cost of breakfast is $1.40. If you are a student that receives free or reduced priced lunches, those same benefits apply for breakfast. Reduced price breakfast is .30 and students eligible for free meals will receive both lunch and breakfast at no charge.
Breakfast is served each morning in the school’s cafeteria before classes begin. TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT AWARDED GRANT Congratulations to the Margaretta Transportation Department for successfully completing a retrofit project that resulted in a grant from the Ohio Clean Diesel School Bus Fund in the amount of $26,100! Ohio EPA estimates that by retrofitting 12 buses with diesel oxidation catalysts with closed crankcase filtration systems resulted in an annual reducation of 14.6 pounds of fine particulate pollutants, 168 pounds of carbon monoxide, 60.2 pounds of hydrocarbons and an overall reduction of 40.6% of pollution from these school buses. Margaretta's transportation department's pro-active efforts is helping to protect the health of students and drivers, and improve air quality in the city of Castalia.

This system enables the district to quickly notify parents, students and employees of situations within the district including delays and school cancellations. E-COLLECT The Board of Education is now using eCollect of Ohio to assist in the collection of non-sufficient fund checks. ECollect utilizes federal and state laws allowing the electronic recovery of funds which results in a higher rate of recovery at no cost to the school district. The cost becomes the responsibility of those who write the NSF checks. We will continue to accept checks on the condition that the check writer authorizes us to process the payment as a check transaction or an electronic funds transfer from the account in the event the check is returned NSF. WIND TURBINE UPDATE The wind turbine has been installed at Margaretta Elementary. SUREnergy received grant funds and donated the cost to construct and install the turbine. Jr. High girls (grades 6-8) that are interested in attending softball camp on March 10th should pick up registration forms in the Athletic Directors Office. Carnations for Valentine's Day will be sold during the lunch periods by the student government. The cost is $1.00 per flower. If you wish to go out for a spring sport, remember that you need a current physical on file. Check with Mrs. Gardner in the AD Office if you are not sure or need the paperwork. You will not be allowed to practice without one. The girl's varsity track team will be having a meeting Thursday the 16th at 3:00 in the high school library. Any junior girls interested in Buckeye Girls State which will be held at the University Of Mount Union from June 10th-16th can stop by the Guidance Office to sign up and get an application. The Student Government is sponsoring a High School Winter Formal Dance on Saturday, February 11. The dance will be in the high school gym from 7:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets will be sold starting Monday, Feb. 6th in your English classes. The cost is $10 per person. If you are bringing a guest from another school you must get the pass through the main office. Tickets may also be purchased before and after school in room 215 (Senor's room). The following scholarships are available in the Guidance Office: MARMO SOLO & EMSEMBLE CONTEST On February 4, 2012, several Margaretta High School students participated in the OMEA District 2 Solo & Ensemble Contest. Students prepared either a solo or a small group and performed for a judge. Students receiving superior (I) ratings were: Emily Krebs – flute, Michael Rankin – alto saxophone, Mitchell Cramer – trombone, Frankie Scott – tuba, and the Woodwind Trio consisting of Emily Krebs, Maria Nielsen, and Lacey Kihn. Students receiving excellent (II) ratings were Maria Nielsen – oboe, Kayla Daniel – oboe, Kari Mapus – trumpet, the Clarinet Quartet consisting of Lacey Kihn, Debbie Fultz, Gabby Taylor, and Alysa Fultz, and the Brass Quartet consisting of Michael Banda, Eric Schneider, Noah Stanley, and Robbie Moser. POWER LIFTING TEAM Congratulations to the power lifting team for placing 4th overall at the Kenton Regional Power lifting meet. Placing for MHS was: Brent Balduff & Jarrett Paule 2nd; Derek Kuns & Chris Casanova 4th; Michael Rankin 5th; Mitch Robinson 7th; Derek Abbott 8th; Cody Caldwell 11th; and Dylan Rohrbaugh 13th. Congratulations also goes to Derek Kuns, Cody Caldwell & Chris Casanova for becoming "Super Bear" lifters of 1,000 plus pounds. FFA NEWS The Margaretta FFA competed in the Sub-District Public Speaking Contest last night at Shelby High School. In the Beginning Prepared contest where students prepare and present a 5-7 minute speech on an Agricultural topic and then answer up to five minutes of questions, Dalton Sullivan placed fifth. In the Advanced Prepared Contest where students prepare a 6-8 minute speech and answer questions, Jessica Stacy placed third. In the Extemporaneous Contest where students draw a topic, have thirty minutes to prepare and present a 4-6 minute speech and then answer questions, Karli Lane placed first. Congratulations to all three of these students. Jessica and Karli will advance to the District competition on February 29. Also, this past Friday several members turned in applications to the District FFA Evaluation. Graduates Emily Bailey and Courtney Balduff applied for the American FFA Degree. This is the highest degree a member can earn in the FFA. Both of these applications successfully advanced to the state evaluation. Karli Lane submitted the Star State Degree application. Her application also advanced. Four the State FFA Degree. All four of these applications successfully moved forward as well. These members are Joanna Michel, Jessica Stacy, Kolby Munk and Mitchell Cramer. Three members completed proficiency award applications as well. Proficiency Awards recognize outstanding Supervised Agricultural Experience programs. Kaylee Kuns applied for the Equine Science, Jon Steager the Grain Production area and Chris Gysan the Turf grass Management proficiency. All three of these applications advanced to the state level. Finally, our chapter officers submitted their officer books to be evaluated. The Treasurer book completed by Jon Steager received a Gold Rating. The Secretary Book completed by Jordan Kurt also received a Gold Rating. The Reporter Scrapbook submitted by Jessica Stacy also received a Gold Rating and placed 2nd in the district. Congratulations to all of these students that successfully submitted applications to the District Evaluations. OMEA DISTRICT 2 HONORS BAND & CHOIR Congratulations to the following MHS students for auditioning for and being accepted into the OMEA District 2 Honors Band and Choir. Madeline Gieger - alto, Emily Krebs - flute, Kari Mapus - trumpet, Noah Stanley - horn, Mitchell Cramer - trombone, and Jonah Stanley - euphonium. The STAMP OUT BULLYING Middle school students were presented with a "STAMP Out Bullying" program presented by guest speaker Dr. Jay Banks. Dr. Banks has appeared on Nickelodeon, written with Disney Productions, been featured on the Hallmark Channel, and performed for over 30 years in 44 states. This program was sponsored by First Christian Church, Upward and J.H. Routh Packing.
HAT DAY Thanks to everyone that participated in "Hat Day". There are some really terrific hats and we collected over $303 to send to the Susan G Komen Foundation. BAND NEWS Emily Krebs, junior, recently auditioned for the OMEA Northwest Regional Orchestra held at Bowling Green High School. Emily was selected as the first chair flute player in this ensemble and will perform with the group on Sunday, November 13th at 3:30 pm at Bowling Green High School. On Saturday, November 19, Emily Krebs and Maria Nielsen will perform at part of the Capital University New Music Reading Clinic held on the campus of Capital University. Emily and Maria were selected to perform with the high school honors band that will close out the weekend on Saturday starting at 12:15 pm. Congratulations to Emily and Maria for representing MHS in these fine ensembles. 9|11 CEREMONIES Several members of the Margaretta Band participated in the 9/11 Ceremonies in downtown Sandusky this past Sunday. They joined with member of the Perkins, Sandusky, and SCCS bands to perform several patriotic pieces for the assembled crowd. Many thanks to these students and their parents for being involved in such an important ceremony.

"It is a great reflection of the education you and the Margaretta High School Music Department provide to students of the Margaretta School District. This is a very honorable event as we pay tribute to those serving and those that have served. Thanks again for your services." STUDENT PICK-UP AND DROP OFF Please send a note to both the teacher and the office on the day that your child is not riding the bus. Sending notes allows the teacher and student to prepare efficiently. If a note is not received the day of alternate dismissal the child will be placed on the bus. If you have more then one child here at Margaretta Elementary School, 2 notes need to come with each child. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. We do not want any children going home on the bus to an empty house. We ask that you pull up to where the sidewalk ends to drop off your children. It will go faster for everyone, both in the mornings and the afternoons. Please display in your window the sign with your child/ren’s name so the staff members can get your children as quick as possible. Thank you for your cooperation. STAMP OUT BULLYING Students in grades 3-5 had the privilege of being entertained and educated with an anti-bullying assembly presented by Dr. Jay Banks. This high-energy mix of music, slapstick comedy, animated story-telling and spot on application was made possible by: Upward Sports, First Christian Church and J.H. Routh Packing. Age-appropriately framed for an elementary school it empowers each victim and bystander over bullying situations. What is STAMP? S – Stay away from bullies. Dr. Banks is a credentialed educator and a nationally-accomplished entertainer. He has appeared on almost every major TV network spanning over 30 years in 44 states. Jay tackles bullying in such a way that participants leave the presentation describing the experience as electric, intriguing, hilarious, engaging, inspiring, meaningful and transforming.

GERM BUSTERS Kindergarten students enjoyed a visit with Mrs. Stimmel and the "germ buster" from the Bellevue Hospital. The students learned about proper hand washing techniques using special black lights.

4TH GRADE VEGGIE U PROGRAM 4th graders in Mrs. Blevins and Mrs. Bohn's classes recently participated in a "taste test" as part of their Veggie U program in science. Veggie U, a local program funded through donations, provides students with a hands on opportunity to learn how healthy eating directly impacts their future in terms of health benefits, conservation, and global awareness. In addition, students learn the basic life cycle and function of plants in our natural world.
