Mrs. Ball's 1st grade science students participated in 3 educational programs sponsored by the Erie County Soil and Water Department. The presentations were aligned with Ohio's Academic Content Standards. The primary focus was on natural resource conservation. Tim White's presentation complimented the Life Science unit on animals. The students got to feel and examine ever wild animal pelt from Ohio's region. The deer pelt was larger than any student!Celine Hemminger's presentation linked our Earth and Space Science unit with soil, worms, and composting! Students painted with soil and the red wiggly worms were closely examined before putting them in our class composting container. Hopefully our compost will be ready to use to plant flowers for Mother's Day! Mrs. Hemminger's return visit demonstrated how to conserve resources by reusing, reducing, and recycling! The 1st grade students had a great time reusing paper to make origami containers, and note pads!

Fifth Grade Olympics Challenge
March 1, 2010 was the first Olympic challenge as part of the preparation of the Ohio Achievement Assessments. The Olympic colors of the rings depict each team’s color. Every two weeks, the team members who have the most points gathered from their OAA practice get to participate in the Olympic challenge. The simulated Olympic activity this time was ice skating. Each student had two paper plates on their feet and had to “skate” around cones without losing them. Mrs. Grahl’s team (black) won the bronze; Mrs. Day’s team (red) won the silver, and Mrs. Cheek’s team (yellow) won the gold. All the students cheered them all on!

Fifth Grade Olympics are taking place at Margaretta Elementary in preparation for the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA). Students are practicing in the content areas of Reading, Math and Science. Five Olympic Teams were formed from the students. After two weeks of practice they have an Olympic Physical Challenge. The winner of the physical challenge gets to keep the torch until the next challenge. The torch is passed from the past winning Olympic Team to the new Olympic winner every two weeks. Our students are in high spirits and motivated to practice for their upcoming Ohio Assessment Challenge in April in the spirit of Olympic Excellence!
Rock Farlow’s leadership class along with Margaretta Elementary third and fourth graders had a wonderful Valentine Day celebration! Some of the activities included making Valentine Day cards; face painting, and decorating cupcakes. A great time was had by all!! This activity was sponsored by our fabulous PTO!
Second Quarter Polar Pride Assemblies recognized students for their outstanding achievement and attendance. Also recognized at the assemblies were the winners of the “Count Me In” program which promotes perfect attendance. B.U.G. awards were included this quarter for students who have brought up a grade at least 5% or a letter grade.

Handbook change with electronic devices and cell phones:
Revised : January 25, 2010.
Students at Margaretta Elementary are to leave cell phones and electronic devices (devices that contain batteries.) at home. In the event that a student chooses to bring an electronic device or cell phone to school and it is lost or stolen; the school WILL NOT be responsible. Any student caught with an electronic device or cell phone during school hours (7:30 am -3:00 pm) and any after school functions/activities at Margaretta Elementary, including field trips, will receive the following consequence.
First and Second Offence:
The cell phone or electronic device will be confiscated and the parent will be asked to pick it up at the end of the day. The student will serve an after school detention.
After the Second Offence:
Failure to follow reasonable direction of administration will result in the electronic device being confiscated, and the parent will be asked to pick it up at the end of the day. The students will serve an out of school suspension.

Holiday Celebration!! Mr. Rock Farlow’s leadership class provided many fun and exciting activities for our 3rd and 4th graders. Some of the activities included decorating cookies, making Christmas cards, and face painting. It was a good time had by ALL!! Many thanks to Margaretta PTO for sponsoring this event!!

Rock Farlow’s Leadership Class from Margaretta High School organized a Fall Festival for Margaretta Elementary 5th and 6th grades. These activities included bobbing for apples, mummy race, face painting, along with plenty of food and fun. The event was sponsored by the PTO. Many many thanks!
On Monday morning, November 2, 2009, the second and third graders presented a very special performance for our local veterans. American Legion Post 83 color Guard presented the colors along with the Pledge of Allegiance. The students’ performance was absolutely beautiful. There were very few dry eyes in the audience at the conclusion of our veterans being honored.

Margaretta Elementary celebrated National Lunch Week by inviting Kindergarten parents to join their child for lunch. We had a fantastic turnout of parents, grandparents, and a few aunts and uncles!
Big Brothers/ Sisters started today at Margaretta Elementary. Elementary students are paired with students from Rock Farlow’s Margaretta High School leadership class. Our students look forward to spending time with their big brother or sister each week.
Mrs. Kathleen Danevich’s second grade has been working on their fluency and creativity with the creation of hand rhymes.

Sixth Graders Help Senior Citizens
On Tuesday, September 29 Brandy Bennett and the American Red Cross will be doing two 1 hour Kids Care Club activities with Margaretta Elementary sixth grade students. “Preparing For Emergencies: Let’s Build a First Aid Kit”: The American Red Cross will provide a lesson on preparing for emergencies, what should be in a first aid kit and an emergency kit, different kinds of first aid kits: family, work, car, pet, etc. Then we will put together a First Aid Kit designed especially for senior citizens. Brandy will deliver these kits to Serving Our Seniors and the Senior Center. Our sixth graders will assist our seniors in the community by providing them with these emergency kits.

We are concerned with safety. This is the reason we’d like to reinforce the curb-side pick-up and drop-off only procedure immediately. Parents and guardians are to stay in their cars and drive through the pick-up and drop-off area with the ID card in the window.
Cars are driving through the area where students are being dropped off and picked up on their way to the exit. This is a major concern as we see children running across the drive to and from their parents’ cars after they are dismissed to their parents or when their parents let then out on the driver’s side in the morning.
Please do not drop off before 7:30 am in the morning. Staff are not on duty prior to this time. The children are to come directly in the lobby and wait until the morning monitor takes them to the gym. In the afternoon we will monitor your child or children to your car. This will help eliminate the confusion at the main entrance, help better insure the safety of our children, and keep the traffic flowing smoothly.
Just a reminder as we did last year we’d like parents to come in the driveway off of Maple Avenue in TWO lanes. This is an entrance only access road and it is large enough for two lanes. When you get to the parking area the right lane continues down to the first row of parked cars near the old building and drive behind them and up to the drop off lane. The left lane turns at the first and shortest route to the drop off lane. When you get to where the two lanes meet PLEASE GO EVERY OTHER CAR TO THE DROP OFF POINT. (Lane from the left lets lane from the right in and vice versa). Thank you.
Please show your IDENTIFICATION CARD; this really speeds up the process. If you need a new ID card contact the office. Parents and guardians are to stay in their cars and drive through the pick-up area with the ID card in the window.

Dear Parents,
Welcome Back to Margaretta Elementary School's. Exciting is the first word that comes to my mind when walking through the halls of Margaretta Elementary School.
Our school is proud to teach approximately 615 kindergarten through sixth grade students. The long tradition of our caring, compassionate staff and overwhelming parental and community involvement continue to contribute to our overall academic success. It is this link that has become a hallmark of our successful learning community, helping our students grow academically and socially.
We enjoy working with each and every child and family throughout our school environment. Our goal is to provide a well-rounded education for all. Each and every child in our school will not only learn the much important Ohio academic standards, but also be taught to be responsible, to be respectful and to build relationships in all that they do.
