Connecting Children to their Dreams.....

Mohican Outdoor School 2010

Friday, February 12

It was a very busy week packed with new friendships and an appreciation for the outdoors! This was Margaretta's 19th year at the Mohican Outdoor School. The school continues to provide students with an organized program that centers on math, social studies, and science Ohio State Education Standards.

The students amazed us for the 2nd year in a row by having 0 food waste during the 11 meals! This includes ketchup, syrup and ice~not to mention not a crumb left on their plates! The last few meals consisted of pancakes, pizza, corn dogs, mexican feast, cold cut sandwiches, chicken, pudding, jello, green beans and brownies...just to name a few.

Class rotation continued and concluded with a "Winter Olympics". Each student participated in one of the following events: luge, curling, snow sculpture, cross country skiing, knock hockey, snowball throw and biathlon. The students also participated in the "Leatherstocking Theatre". The teachers were amazed at the skits presented from each dorm and the quality of our Margaretta thespians! We also had an indoor campfire where students were entertained by the Mohican teachers. The students sang some traditional campfire songs including a tune about photosynthesis. During our last evening the students played pioneer games and were given one last chance to visit the snakes and turtles at the school.

An enormous amount of planning from parents, teachers and administration is required to make this program a success. Based on the faces of the students that you see on this page, we can once again say it was all well worth it!

Wednesday, February 10

It's hard to believe that this is our 3rd day here at Mohican Outdoor School! The students enjoyed last night's supper of hot dogs, mac and cheese, salad, deviled eggs and ice cream sandwiches. We saw many tired faces during social time last night, but they were comforted with hot showers and lights out by 10:00 pm.

After walking several miles during classes and climbing through several feet of snow, the students were anxiously awaiting a bountiful breakfast of eggs, tator tots, bacon and oatmeal. Students continued a class rotation of outdoor survival, compass challenge, archery and a natural history hike to Hemlock Falls. After a dorm inspection and choice activities they were fed ham, scalloped potatoes, cooked carrots, salad and cottage cheese. During the afternoon the students were treated to a special living history play called Greenville Players. Several Margaretta "little mites" were invited to participate: Chas Fresch, Gabby Fish, Kristen Yost, Paul Fox, Spencer Slocum, Ambria Didion and Bryce Scott.

After receiving another couple of inches of snow today, we now believe 1 person instead of 85 should probably only pray for snow!

The students awoke today at 7:00 a.m. after a great night of sleep! Breakfast included french toast sticks, oatmeal and sausage. Today the students will be attending
microscopic investigations, sensory awareness, compass challenge, astronomy and archery. There is also plenty of time for tubing, cross-country skiing, nature crafts, pioneer cooking, animal care and hiking to Hemlock Falls. We are getting much more snow today, possibly 10 more inches over the next couple of days. After tredging through knee deep snow, the students were ready to eat a hardy meal of salisbury steak, potatoes, peas, mandarian oranges, pasta salad, lettuce salad and bread. We are having a great experience at this unique school setting. Many new friendships are being formed and lessons learned in physical, earth and life sciences!

We arrived to the Mohican Outdoor School Monday around 11:45 a.m. The roads to Butler, Ohio, were clear. The only minor problem was getting the buses up the snow-covered hill to the school. We were surprised at the amount of snow the Mohican Outdoor School received over the weekend~16 inches of snow! The students settled into their dorms and were quickly off to their first class after eating a packed lunch. The classes on Monday included: cross-country skiing, outdoor survival, natural history of Hemlock Falls, archery and nocturnal awareness. We enjoyed a delicious supper of turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, salad, corn, bread and cookies.
